Safeway wants to expand and modernize their store.
November 1, 2009
I attended Safeway’s roll-out of their new plans for the Solano Avenue store on Nov. 1, 2009. I’m pleased to report that bike racks are shown immediately in front of the two main entrances to the store – on Solano, and in the parking garage. That was a welcome sight. I turned in written comments congratulating them on this design feature and asking them to go the next step – cover the racks out in front of the store and install some e-lockers as well as racks. Come to think of it – we need to make sure the racks can accommodate trailers and bikes with attached “half-bikes.” Of course, it wouldn’t hurt them to put some bike racks at their current store. It’s woefully underserved right now. I encourage you to send them your comments regarding bicycle facilities. -Nick
April 27, 2010 Planning & Zoning Commission Meeting
Safeway presented specific plans about their remodel. There were many comments from community members… unfortunately the minutes don’t seem to be available on the city site. As for Albany Strollers & Rollers’ issues, I saw only a few small loop-style bike racks on the sidewalk. So I spoke, saying that they need to provide more parking for bicycles, and specifically they need to have parking for cargo bikes such as the Xtracycle and trailers. They should provide additional parking on the sidewalk on Solano, but also in their underground parking garage. Commissioner David Arkin, who rides an Xtracycle himself, later spoke in support of my suggestion. -Amy
